Name: Wander | Walter Price
Canon and medium: Shadow of the Colossus
Age: None given, but likely 17-20ish | 17
Preincarnation Species: Human
Preincarnation Appearance: It changes, so here is a handy little picture that shows his gradual transformation. After defeating the sixteenth colossus he looks completely possessed.
Any differences: He'll be sporting his pre-colossus murdering spree appearance + a pair of glasses.
Preincarnated History: Wander grew up in a simple, traditional little village. When he was a small child his mother fell ill and passed away. He still had his father, a hunter who passed his skill with the bow to his son, but he went missing on a hunting expedition and was presumed dead when Wander was 15. Because his life wasn't quite sucky enough, his childhood friend, a young woman named Mono, was sacrificed due to having an unspecified cursed fate. This was the straw that broke Wander's back, because over time he had developed intense feelings for Mono. She was all he had left in the world. He decided to do what any rational grief-and-love-struck boy would: steal her body, an ancient magical sword, and take off on his horse.
What possessed him to do this? Well, the lore in his village told of a powerful entity called Dormin. Dormin apparently had the power to bring back the souls of the dead and was sealed off in the ominously named Forbidden Lands. It was, as you might guess, forbidden to go there under any circumstances, but you can't dangle a juicy legend like that in front of a young man with a dead childhood friend/crush and expect nothing to happen.
So in the dead of night he left with the stolen blade and Mono's body. Once he arrived at the Forbidden Lands, he made his way to a dilapidated shrine. He set Mono's body on the altar in the shrine before being threatened by several shadows rising from the ground. The ancient sword made quick work of the shadows, banishing them with a simple ray of light. This caught the attention of Dormin, who was surprised to see a mortal in Their territory armed with the ancient sword. The disembodied voice(s) in the sky told Wander that it might be possible to bring Mono's soul back with the sword, but a) he had to do something for Dormin first, and b) there was going to be a hefty price attached to the reseurrection. Not giving much of a shit at this point, Wander agreed. The task: kill the sixteen statuesque colossi roaming the Forbidden Lands. The price: well, we'll get to that in a bit.
Wander proceeded to battle and defeat each colossus. After delivering the final blow to a colossus, the body would release a strange shadowy essence, which would enter Wander's body via black tendrils and render him unconscious. This essence belonged to Dormin. Ages ago, the entity was broken up into sixteen pieces. Each piece was sealed within a colossus. Upon their defeat, the fragments began collecting within Wander, slowly corrupting his appearance and preparing him as a vessel for Dormin. This was the price Wander paid for the chance to resurrect Mono. His loyal steed Agro ended up sacrificing herself to the cause as well. As the two crossed a bridge it began to collapse and Agro, knowing she wasn't going to make it across, bucked Wander off her back and to safety. She then plummeted into a water-filled ravine as Wander watched, unable to save her. Resigned to his ultimate fate at this point, he headed towards the final colossus' domain.
Meanwhile, Lord Emon, a shaman from Wander's village (and the man whose ancestors were responsible for sealing Dormin in the first place), realized that the ancient sword was missing, along with a certain redhead and his dead love interest. It didn't take much time to put two and two together and he quickly amassed a small group of soldiers to pursue and stop Wander. They arrived at the Shrine of Worship just in time to see the completion of the ritual: the final colossus had been slain. Furious, Emon explained that Wander was just being used and ordered his men to kill him, hoping it would prevent Dormin's resurrection. The soldiers shot Wander in the thigh with a crossbow and stabbed him through the heart once he was down. This didn't really help at all, however, and Dormin possessed Wander's body completely. They revealed Their true form and proceeded to terrorize Lord Emon and his men, wreaking havoc in the Shrine and causing them to flee. Before leaving, Emon casted a spell by throwing he ancient sword into a small pool of water at the back of the Shrine. The spell stripped Dormin from Wander and sucked them both into the enchanted pool. As Emon and his troops made their escape, the bridge leading into the Forbidden Lands collapsed, preventing anyone from ever trespassing on them again.
It looked like all of Wander's efforts have been for nothing, but somehow, Dormin managed to keep Their end of the deal and Mono woke up in the empty Shrine. She wasn't alone for long -- miraculously, Agro hobbled into the Shrine. The two made their way to the back of the shrine where they found a red-haired infant with tiny horns. Mono picked the infant up and, accompanied by Agro, headed to the garden located halfway up the shrine. It is there the game ends, with Mono and Agro trapped in the Forbidden Lands, raising the reborn Wander, the cursed infant who would one day sire the line of horned children featured in ICO. That, however, is a story for another day.
Reincarnated History: Walter Price was born to a happily married couple in a suburban area of Locke City. His parents always strove to be a picture-perfect all-American apple-pie-and-white-picket-fence-blah-blah-de-blah family, and they appear to have succeeded on that front for the most part. Key word being appear. They're not among the financial elite -- they don't even really reach "comfortably middle class" status, although they try to make it seem like they do for their son's (and appearance's) sake. All in all, the Prices live a bit beyond their means.
Additionally, Walter has had a Christian upbringing, complete with a parochial education that's been padded by several extracurriculars. College application season is coming up, after all. His parents are pushing him to apply to a private university, and while his faith and living up to his parents' expectations is important to him, Walter has been having his doubts about that plan. His interest lies with biology, but his parents are trying to steer him towards theology. Walter feels like they're railroading him towards a dead end career-wise and plans to apply to schools with programs that suit him better. He hasn't broken the news to Mr. and Mrs. Price yet. It's on his to-do list. Really. The problem stems from the Price's brand of parenting. They're overprotective and outright smothering at times, and although Walter loves them both unconditionally, in recent years he's started to feel suffocated. He wants to make them proud, of course, but he's torn between that and pursuing something he's passionate about. In his opinion, there's more to life than the Church. He feels he has untapped potential and wants to do more with his life. However, the pervasive fear of disappointing his mom and dad has kept him from speaking up most of the time. This had led to a lot of frustration on his part, though his parents are oblivious and are continuing to push theology at him.
First Echo: While attending a field trip to a local historical museum, Walter was given the chance to examine and hold a replica of one of the swords on display. The weight and feel of the blade felt vaguely familiar, but he shrugged it off as weird deja-vu BS. Once he returned home, however, an ancient looking sword and sheath were hanging from his bedpost. Can't really ignore that!
Preincarnation Personality: Initially, Wander's quest seems incredibly noble. He is willing to risk everything to save the love of his life. When Dormin tells him that the price he's going to be pay will be heavy, his only reply is, "It doesn't matter." This paints a very selfless picture, but really, Mono is just one person. Wander is willing to make a deal with an entity of questionable morality just to bring her back. To hell with the rest of the world. It's somewhat understandable -- he has no loved ones left and therefore has no attachment to this world or his life -- but does that excuse his actions? The religious leader from his village certainly doesn't think so. His willingness to do whatever it takes to save Mono's life is admirable, bu the actions he takes are tainted by selfishness. This is particularly evident during the fight with Phalanx, the thirteenth colossus. Most colossi have varying levels of hostility and aggression, but Phalanx is completely peaceful. At no point does it ever attempt to harm Wander or Agro. Wander still slays this colossus without hesitation because it stands between him and his ultimate goal.
It's obvious that Wander possesses major determination. He's not particularly strong or exceptionally brave, and yet he's able to take down sixteen colossi armed with a simple bow and a stolen sword. He's incredibly single-minded once he's got a goal. This shows at the end of the game as well. When Lord Emon and his entourage arrive to chew him out he ignores them and tries to reach Mono. When they shoot him in the thigh, he still tries to get back up. When they stab him through the heart, he staggers to his feet and STILL tries to get to her. His last conscious action is reaching for Mono. After Dormin is stripped from him and he is a literal shadow of his former self he's still trying to get to that altar, fighting Emon's spell to do so.
He's also fairly intelligent and can think quickly on his feet. Fighting the colossi is not as straightforward as stabbing them until they are dead. Each colossus requires a different strategy. Many need to be tricked in order to access their weak points. For example, the third colossus has armor that prevents Wander from scaling it. He must get the colossus to break the armor by standing on a raised platform and letting it take a swing at him. When it does, he dives away just in time and the colossus' arm collides with the platform, shattering its armor. The twelfth colossus is also armored and after Wander notices this he frightens it off the edge of a cliff with a burning torch. The fall destroys the colossus' armor, allowing Wander to jump on it and begin the stabfest.
Outside of the life-or-death situations the battles force him into, Wander is a rather gentle and reserved young man. He has experienced a lot of hardships in his life but internalized all his grief until Mono died. Then everything kind of fell apart. The Wander we see in-game has been pushed to an emotional extreme, which explains the choices he makes.
Any differences: Having two living and loving parents has made a huge difference in his life. Walter is more adjusted than Wander ever was and is extremely close to his family. Wander was forced to grow up very quickly after his father died. He had to fend for himself. Walter, being a 21st century American teenager, hasn't had to deal with anything like that. He's still mature for his age but he isn't jaded. Walter is also a very goal-oriented and passionate person but it doesn't reach the level of Wander's obsessive devotion. His determination is channeled into his education instead. In short, Wander was a slightly bitter realist while Walter is a naive optimist.
Walter considers himself a Good Person™. He strives to do what's morally right, even if it means sacrificing some of his wants and needs. He would never consider making a deal with a potentially malevolent entity like his preincarnation, especially since the whole "worshipping pagan gods" thing goes against his beliefs, but then again, he wouldn't really feel the same need to do anything like that. Walter isn't emotionally cornered like Wander was and has a lot to live for. Walter is also a people-pleaser, and the people he strives to please the most are his parents. Unfortunately, they don't exactly see eye to eye on a few topics, leaving Walter frustrated with the current state of affairs. Even when he does try (kind of) to voice his opinion he's drowned out. While he doesn't resent his parents, he sometimes resents the way they treat him.
Abilities: Wander is a normal human, but he has several tools in his arsenal that make the sixteen battles manageable.
ANCIENT SWORD: He has no formal training and it shows; all he can really manage are clumsy, off-balance swings and frantic stabs. The blade also helps him navigate, pointing the way to the next colossus. In a colossi-free setting it'll just be kind of shiny in the sun.
BOW: This, on the other hand, is something he's freakishly good with. In-game you can stand up while riding Agro at full speed and shoot accurately. Is this useful while fighting colossi? Not really. Is it awesome? Hell yes.
HORSE: Wander is a very skilled rider and his horse is built for speed and endurance. Agro is an invaluable ally during several battles.
Wander also has slightly above-average strength and stamina. These stats increase slightly after each colossus fight as he absorbs the fragments of Dormin's soul. Additionally, Wander has limited parkour-esque skills that allow him to scale the taller colossi.
Roleplay Sample - Third Person: Sunday dinners at the Price household were always complex affairs. Walter's mother had been cooking since early afternoon, and as usual, the food was amazing. But Walter just wasn't enjoying it as much as he typically did. To say he had a lot on his mind was an understatement; his senior year was starting tomorrow and he still hadn't had a meaningful conversation with his parents about his future. Sure, they had a lot to say about it, but it felt like he was never involved in the discussion.
Now would probably be a good time -- after all, family dinners were meant for this sort of thing -- but Walter couldn't get the words out. He stabbed at his roast absently, soaking up the gravy lake beneath it. It was more mush than meat now.
"Something eating at you, Walt?" His dad. Here was the perfect opportunity. He took a deep breath and set his fork down. "Actually, dad, I was just thinking..." His parents smiled expectantly, eyes locked on him.
We really need to talk about college
Sometimes I feel like you guys are smothering me
"Walt" is a really obnoxious nickname
Okay, that last one was kind of petty and irrelevant, but his mind was racing to fill in the blank. His mouth, unfortunately, wasn't really cooperating
Come on, Walter. You can do this.
"...about college, and I wanted to --"
That was all he was able to get out before his parents took over. They began rattling off reassurances; how his grades were good enough to attend St. So-And-So's, and how he had St. Whoever's as a backup, and... and... and it all turned into the usual white noise. Walter was just nodding at that point, and when they were done gushing he excused himself to his room. No matter how hard he tried, everything was always the same.
Wonderful.
Roleplay Sample - Network: [ The handwriting that appears on the network is thick, blocky and impeccably neat; almost typeface-like in its uniformity ]
All right, I'll be honest. I have no idea what I'm doing here. I've been reading this... network over the last couple days, but everything I've seen here sounds absolutely insane.
[ Several dots appear as Walter taps his mechanical pencil against the paper, struggling to articulate his feelings. How are you supposed to react to this kind of thing?? He starts again, erases, tries again, erases again... this cycle continues for another minute or so, until -- ]
If anyone can give me a quick rundown of what this all means that would be ideal. Additionally, if anyone wants a sword one kind of
appeared in my room
I really don't know what I'm supposed to do with it. If my parents find it they're going to have a lot of questions that I can't even begin to answer, so I think it's best if someone takes it off my hands. For now, at least.
[A few more pencil dots, and then he feels to finish this message with a small -- ]
Thank you.
